Gusto + Xero
Payroll transactions sync with Xero each time you run payroll, keeping your books up to date and making your bank reconciliations a piece of cake.
Control how much detail you’d like to see in Xero - choose to sync entries broken down by Employee, Departments, Job Titles, or Gusto Projects.
Gusto also supports Xero tracking categories so you get better visibility into payroll expenses without the need to manually tag transactions.
Getting started
- Click the ‘Get this app’ button at the top of this page.
- Follow the prompts to create your Gusto account and activate your 3 months free offer.
- Answer a few quick questions to create your company profile.
- That’s it! You’re ready to add your employees and run your first payroll.
Already a Gusto customer? Connect to Xero.
- Log into your Gusto account and go to the App Directory tab.
- Search for and select Xero.
- Click Connect and authorize the integration.
- Customize your sync settings and map your Xero Chart of Accounts to your Gusto payroll categories.

DO NOT USE: Look on Trustpilot First!
Let me tell you, it's a terrible look for XERO that they promote Gusto as their main payroll app, Gusto is awful. Terrible customer service like 90% of the time, an insane number of errors, complete lack of control due to internal settings, severely lacking in features... Without a doubt, not contractor friendly, I can say that with complete certainty as they do not allow you to run Workers Comp reports unless you use THEIR Insurance partner (offensively out of touch).
This is nothing more than a pretty, simple little program that takes you for a ride without your consent.

We used to view them as you get what you pay for, a low cost/low support payroll for simple payrolls. Nowadays the costs have been rising and the support has been diminishing more. They don't even use their own platform for their payroll.
